These lagoons date to the 12th century and are the most important in Europe. Salt production is a major industry in the region and is exported throughout Europe.

There are numerous beautiful marinas all along the coast for those of a sailing persuasion. A short drive inland and you can enjoy glorious un-spoilt country side. Alicante and Cartegena are beautiful coastal cities in the south east and to the north east is Valencia and Barcelona. Murcia and Elche are a short distance inland in the south east. There is a wealth of Spanish history to indulge in, and a vibrant, modern culture to enjoy with excellent shopping areas. There are street markets in different towns in the region each week and you will find everything from genuine Spanish hand craft to inexpensive leather goods, shoes, bags, ceramics and silverware. There is also a huge range of fresh locally produced vegetables and fruit.

Healthy Climate:

The World Health Organisation has recognized the Costa Blanca as one of the healthiest places to live in Europe. Apart from the long hours of sunshine and the dry climate, the nearby salt lagoons of Torrevieja, Alicante and San Pedro draw moisture from the air creating a micro climate. This type of climate is very beneficial to people suffering from rheumatism, arthritis, asthma and skin related conditions such as psoriasis. The waters of the lagoons are said to have curative properties and it is a common sight to see people applying the dark mud to their bodies and taking medicinal baths.

Health Care:

The quality of the health service in Spain is of a very high standard. Several of the hospitals in the region are recognized as among the best in Spain. There are a large number of medical clinics (centro salud) in the area and these centers operate 24 hours each day. Visitors and non-residents are entitled to free medical attention on production of the E-111. This form is available through your local government/health office.
